My life as a mom of an artist. It's so much fun!

The very first thing I have to say is being a mom is the best job I ever had. Being the mom of an artist makes it that much sweeter and alot more fun.   This is my fun look at my life as an mom of an artist.  I've not only noticed this in my daughter but in some of her artist friends as well.

Here are 10 interesting things I have found along the way:

1.  Scattered brained much?
My daughter and her artistic friends are so busy creating in their heads that other stuff gets lost in the shuffle. I am an expert at frantic phone calls because she forgot to bring this or that.

1a.  There is never a pocketbook big enough.
It's amazing what finds it's way in my purse. At any given time I have extra pencils, Erasers (3 different types) her pens and for awhile I carried around a huge rolls of duct tape. If she could fit a an extra sketch book in there...

2.  Zoning
When she is in the 'zone', a nuclear war head can strike next to them and they will not notice.  when. You practically got to put food under her nose before she will eat it. And this goes for conversations too,  you get alot of blank looks, huhs, and "I WAS LISTENING TO YOU"  (when they weren't)  anything important, wait to after the zone period, it's easier. It's always worth it when you see what they are creating.

3.  When not zoning,  a food magnet.
I don't think this is particularly an artist thing as much as a college thing.?i can be downstairs making dinner and 5 minutes before I am about to call her I hear her door open and her coming down the steps lol

4.  Procrastination perfection
My daughter and some of her friends love to "think" about their projects building and taking apart and building differently in their heads, and about a week (if I'm lucky)the day before (if I'm not) they will frantically put their art together and turn it in on time or a day late.  Their teachers understand they are artists too.

4a. Time management terror.
Never ever tell them the exact time you need to be somewhere., even if it's an hour away, they won't get ready til the very last minute. Time does not exist to artists, at least that has been my experience, at least not in the same way as it does to the non creatives. LOL

4b.  You will become a victim of the "wait a minute, I got tos"
You will hear this incessantly and it will annoy you.

5. Cardboard hoarders.
If something comes in the house in cardboard, take it out of the box ub the car and throw it in the dumpster on the way home or It will NEVER leave the house,  .. And yes, I've actually did this.

5a.  Garbage ninjas
You will become one.  They want to keep everything! From styrofoam to anything broken, you have to sneak things into the garbage.

6.Mom the  Art scavenger.
The things they do throw away willingly are artwork that looks incredible. You will rescue it and hide it away from them. Or post it on  your facebook...

7. Zombies
After a creative burst, your child will be a zombie. They will wake up to eat and sleep for 3 days. Let them do it!  It's takes alot of effort to be that creative and intense.

7b.  After Creative whining...
It will part of your life, deal with it.  usually it is about how much their creation "sucks" and how"bad" they are as artists.

8. Open minded about everything BUT their interests.
My kid is very open minded but if you are going to talk mythology with her (she has studied it since she was ten) you better know your stuff.  She will make you cry.. she will

8b.  "the box"
They don't live in it or out of it, they don't even acknowledge it exists.

9. Museums & cons
Art museums are good. Cons even better.   If you can it's always worth taking your artist to a Convention.  A gaming convention, a comic convention.. or any convention that you are also interested in.  It's a great way to spend time with your loved one and also a great time to have fun yourself.

9b. You are now connected to the Artist "BORG"but it's a good thing.
Hearing your child talk so much about this or that they are working on and the process of building it or something they have learned in their own research or a class will start to change the way you look at the world in a good way.  You might even think of being creative yourself.

10. Pocket lovers
Cargo pants is a theme with my daughter and a lot of her friends. It's not of fashion. They just like a lot of pockets and 9 times out 10 all of them are full of art supplies

11a. Pencils as hair ornaments
My daughter carries two pencils in her hand and a pencil behind one ear and a pen behind the other one.

PS.  This is daughter approved.

Suicide The growing epidemic

Wrote in Response to Brian Head Welch's comment about Chester Bennington's suicide.  Written in emotion.  Please excuse mistakes.  By Rebecca Basley My heart is very heavy today. Not only am I mourning the loss of a very talented musician who lost his life to a horrible “disease” called depression that caused him to take his own life. I also have had to witness the backlash. The backlash of people who feel they have a right to judge him and his decisions and to see how this attack is affecting people, especially young people who like Chester and like myself, live with mental illness. First off, not all of us experience mental illness the same way. Just because your fight with mental illness never resulted in your desire to take your life doesn’t mean that this is the same for everyone else. For whatever reason, you had the wherewithal to fight off the tendency toward suicide does NOT give you the right to judge someone who has. According to the CD...

So what is interesting?

So what is interesting?  As a general answer, I would say everything.  There is so much to learn, think about, explore, reflect, and simply be in life that it hardly seems fair the short time we are on this earth in this existence to experience all that is interesting.  That is why my motto is " I'm not dead yet!"  I have learned to give "never" the finger in many ways but as with everyone I am a complex   coming to this way of thinking didn't happen overnight and I followed any interesting path to get here. I joke that it all started when I was being created.  I joke there was a panel of gods and goddesses for differing pantheons gathered to grant each new spirit a wish and from that wish, they decided which ones they favored.  While most newly developed spirits asked for things like love, happiness, peace, wisdom, wealth, power the tricksters sat there bored and half listening to what most said and perhaps choosing a few they wanted to mess with. Update

Wow! It’s been a little bit since I updated this blog! What happened you may ask? Well life did.  I also have to type my blog on my phone because we still do not have internet so it takes forever to write anything.  Since I’ve been offline. My daughter graduated with her Associates in Visual Arts. She’s now taking the year off to get her portfolio ready for art school. Our car Pirate now has an 8 year old sister named Buddi (also a rescue)  and they get along.. like you would expect an10 year old boy and an 8 year old girl to get along.., (even though in cat years they are cantakerous geriatrics) but they seem to have found a way to coexist while annoying the crap out of each other.   My husband is hanging in there. He went to prison in 2006 and he has til 2046. It’s taking a toll on him but that is to be expected.  He finally got a job in the prison a few months ago so that will take up some of his time during the day. He’s in a level 4 facility s...
